Your VO2max Decline Is a Range, Not a Rate

You hear it all the time: you lose 1% of VO2max per year after 25. Say it enough and it sounds like physics. Most masters riders take it as gospel, drop their expectations every birthday, and train like the fade is already locked in.
It’s not.
A 2013 study of endurance-trained cyclists in New Zealand found VO2max decline across trained masters athletes ranged from 5% to 46% per decade. Not one number. A range. A wide one. The riders at the low end weren’t genetic lottery winners. They were training specifically to defend their aerobic ceiling.
The Roadman Cycling Masters Training Report 2026 lands in the same place: VO2max decline in masters athletes is highly variable. Training load, intensity distribution, and structured high-intensity work separate the athletes who age slowly from the ones who don’t.
Five percent per decade versus 46% per decade isn’t a rounding error. It’s the difference between racing at 58 and getting dropped on the first climb.
Where you land in that range is a training decision.
Why FTP testing leaves you blind
If the ceiling is what decays, the ceiling is what you need to measure. Most masters riders have a gap in their testing protocol, and it’s not small.
A 20-minute FTP test measures threshold power. Threshold lives in the middle of the aerobic range, around 75-80% of VO2max depending on the athlete. It’s useful. It tells you nothing about the roof.
The common miss: a rider tests FTP every few months, watches it hold or even go up, decides he’s training well, and considers his fitness intact. Meanwhile his VO2max, the ceiling that threshold hangs from, has been quietly dropping. His FTP looks fine because he got more efficient in the middle of his range. The roof came down and he never noticed, because he never measured it.
He finds out at the race. Pace goes hard over the top. A gap opens. He digs and there’s nothing there. Not because threshold failed. Because the space above it, the oxygen system that carries him through a surge and lets him recover, compressed without his knowledge.
A threshold test measures the middle. To find the ceiling, you have to test the ceiling.
The Rollfast dual-effort VO2 method
Rollfast doesn’t use a single all-out effort to estimate VO2max. We use two efforts on the same day, with full recovery between them, to triangulate the ceiling.
The protocol: a 12-minute effort at the hardest pace you can hold for exactly 12 minutes, then full recovery, then a 5-minute maximal effort.
The 12-minute sits at the upper end of VO2max intensity, where oxygen consumption approaches but doesn’t max out. The 5-minute pushes past that, forcing a true peak oxygen response. Averaging and cross-referencing power from both efforts gives a better read of actual VO2max than a 20-minute threshold effort, because you’re approaching the ceiling from two directions.
What you get is a VO2max power number, not just a threshold number. Every training zone then anchors off that.
Cruise and Flow are set as a percentage of VO2max power. So is Threshold. So is VO2 work. When the ceiling drops, the zones move with it. You’re not chasing a stale FTP that no longer matches where your aerobic system actually is.
Masters riders get hit first because the ceiling is the first thing to fall.
The ceiling falls before the floor
The physiology is consistent: in masters endurance athletes, VO2max declines before threshold efficiency, before neuromuscular power, before a lot of other fitness markers. The top compresses first.
Riders who only train threshold are training a piece that’s relatively preserved. They feel fit. Their 20-minute numbers hold. The oxygen system that lets them go over the top with the fast group, recover, and follow the next acceleration is eroding underneath.
Structured VO2max work, efforts in the 3-8 minute range at or above that ceiling, is what slows the decay. Not long easy miles alone. Not threshold intervals alone. Efforts that actually touch the ceiling and force the body to defend it.
Rollfast programs those efforts on purpose, typically twice a week in a build phase, around SFR climbing work and high-cadence spin-ups that teach you to apply power at VO2 intensities without wrecking the rest of the week. The SFR sets (heavy gear, 50-60 rpm, on a climb) build strength substrate. The short maximal efforts teach the engine to run at redline. Together, they create and defend a high ceiling.
You can’t defend what you don’t measure
A rider who tests only FTP is watching the fuel gauge while the engine shrinks.
The 5-to-46 percent range in the research isn’t a curiosity. The outcome isn’t fixed. A 55-year-old who trains specifically to defend his VO2max ceiling can age on a different curve than a 45-year-old who trains only threshold and hopes.
The first step is knowing where your ceiling is. You can’t defend something you’re not measuring.
